Get to know Billy Cottrell
Billy is a living testament to God’s grace and transformation. Growing up in a broken home without faith, his life took a dramatic turn at the age of 20 when he had a radical encounter with Jesus. Since that pivotal moment, Billy has served in nearly every facet of church life. He has served as a Sunday school teacher, children’s church leader, youth leader, and even camp director. Today, alongside his wife Amy, Billy leads the college and career group at Parkway Ministries.
Married for 29 years, Billy and Amy have poured their hearts into raising their two sons, Luke and Jesse. Billy has been there for every milestone—feeding his boys in the middle of the night, attending doctor appointments, and leading Bible studies around the dinner table. Through God’s guidance, Billy has broken generational curses in his family, and even became a first-generation college graduate. Now, his sons are walking paths of their own: Luke is studying nursing at Union College, and Jesse is a sophomore in the Engineering Department at the University of Kentucky, pursuing a degree in Computer Science.
In his professional life, Billy has dedicated 22 years to shaping young minds as an educator. He currently teaches middle school Social Studies at Wallins Elementary in the Harlan County School District. Alongside his wife, Billy has felt called to build a strong spiritual foundation in students, especially after witnessing many young adults struggle with their faith while away at college. They are intentional about being a steady, supportive presence for students, always just a text away when faith is challenged. Outside of church and work, Billy enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, and camping, finding peace in the outdoors. Billy was deeply moved by Parkway’s heart for outreach and its bold commitment to reach outside the box. Billy quotes often, “A church alive is worth the drive!” They are excited to be part of a ministry that impacts thousands across the region.
